The four kinds of ERP you will find in India

TypeStrengthsWatch out for
Global enterprise suitesVery broad, proven at large scale, strong for multinationalsHigh cost, long projects, needs a partner and IT team
Accounting-led softwareFamiliar to accountants, strong on books and GSTLimited production, shop-floor and planning features
Indian cloud ERPs for SMEsGST and Indian payroll built in, faster to go live, priced for SMEsCheck depth in your industry and the vendor's support capacity
Open-source ERPsNo licence fee, flexible, large communityImplementation, hosting and customisation are on you or a partner

What matters most for an Indian manufacturer

  1. Fit with your production. Multi-level BOMs, job cards, material issue against jobs, scrap, and the way your industry counts stock (sheets, rolls, kg, pieces).
  2. GST done properly. GST invoices, e-invoicing above the threshold, e-way bills, HSN codes and GST reports.
  3. Accounts your CA can work with. Built-in ledgers and bank reconciliation, or a reliable Tally sync.
  4. Shop floor and mobile. Supervisors and stores staff will use it on phones and tablets. If they do not, the data will be wrong.
  5. Time to go live. Weeks, not quarters, for a single plant.
  6. Total cost over three years. Subscription or licence, implementation, customisation and support together.
  7. Support you can reach, in your time zone and language, after go-live.

A comparison table you can fill in

Score each shortlisted ERP from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) after seeing your own scenarios run in the demo:

CriterionOption 1Option 2Option 3
BOM, production and costing
Inventory in your units (sheets, rolls, kg)
GST, e-invoice and e-way bill
Accounting or Tally sync
Mobile and shop-floor use
Weeks to go live
Three-year total cost

For weighting and a worked example, see how to choose an ERP.

Red flags when comparing ERPs

  • The demo never leaves the vendor's own sample data.
  • Every gap is answered with "we can customise that", with no price or timeline.
  • No reference customer in your industry or size.
  • GST and e-invoicing are add-ons or handled by a separate tool.
  • The price covers the software but not implementation, training or support.
  • You cannot export your own data if you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best ERP software in India?

It depends on your size and industry. Large multinationals often need a global suite; small and mid-sized manufacturers are usually better served by an Indian cloud ERP with GST, Indian payroll and production built in. Compare options on your own scenarios.

Which ERP is best for small manufacturers in India?

One that covers BOMs, production, stock and GST billing out of the box, works on the phone, goes live in weeks and is priced for SMEs. See ERP for small business.

Is Tally an ERP?

Tally is primarily accounting and inventory software. Many manufacturers keep Tally for accounts and add an ERP for production, purchase, quality and HR, connected through a sync.

What should an ERP for Indian manufacturing include?

BOMs and production, multi-warehouse inventory, purchase with approvals, quality checks, GST invoicing with e-invoices and e-way bills, accounting or Tally sync, and HR and payroll with PF and ESI.

How do I compare ERP vendors fairly?

Send every vendor the same two or three real scenarios, score each on the same weighted criteria, and compare three-year total cost. See how to choose an ERP.
